Dead Squirrel Removal in Mississippi
Squirrels move into attics, soffits and wall voids through the roofline, and a dead one is often found by smell. In Mississippi law a squirrel is a game animal.
How is a squirrel classed in Mississippi?
Mississippi law classes squirrels as game animals, together with white-tailed deer, rabbits and bear (Miss. Code §49-7-1, as reproduced in the Legislature's 2026 bill text). MDWFP lists the southern flying squirrel separately, as a nongame species in need of management.

Before you call anyone. If you hear scratching or movement, there may be live squirrels, which this site does not handle. A single dead squirrel on the attic floor or in the yard is a removal job.
Cases this page is for
- A dead squirrel on the attic floor reached through the hatch.
- A squirrel in the yard, on a porch or in a garage.
- A squirrel in a crawl space reached through an existing access point.
What falls outside it
Live squirrels, trapping, exclusion and sealing the roofline: those are separate trades and are not offered here. A squirrel sealed inside a wall or soffit cavity is information only on this site.
Through this site a squirrel carcass is removed and taken for disposal, and nothing is kept.
How long the odor lasts depends on the animal's size, the temperature, humidity, airflow and where it lies. A squirrel is small, which is one of those factors; no one can promise a date.
From call to removal
- Call, or send the form, and say where the squirrel is and which town you are in.
- Say whether it can be reached from the attic hatch or another existing opening.
- Where an independent operator covers your address, it agrees the price and timing with you.
- The carcass is removed and taken for disposal.
About this animal
How does Mississippi wildlife law class squirrels?
As game animals (Miss. Code §49-7-1, as reproduced in the Legislature's 2026 bill text). The southern flying squirrel is listed by MDWFP as a nongame species in need of management.
Do squirrels carry rabies?
The Mississippi State Department of Health says rabies is not typically seen in rodents such as squirrels.
The squirrel is somewhere above the ceiling. Can it be found?
If the attic floor can be walked or crawled from the hatch, often yes. If the animal is inside a sealed ceiling or wall cavity, it is not removed through this site.
Will someone seal the hole the squirrel used?
Not through this site. Sealing entry points is exclusion work, which is a separate trade.
Where on the property
- In the atticAn animal on the attic floor can usually be reached from the hatch. One inside a ceiling or wall cavity is a different matter.
- Odor, no animal in sightThe smell is there but the animal is not. Where the odor is strongest usually decides whether anything can be done.
- In the yardAn animal in the open, the easiest case to reach. Some city routes for homes may cover it, so check yours first.
